Welcome to Karate
We’re happy you decided to join us for karate lessons. Please read this information as it is important to your safety and success.
Please arrive to class on time, dressed appropriately, and ready to train.
Uniforms can be purchased from the instructor. Please do not wear a uniform purchased elsewhere. Until you purchase a uniform, see What to Wear.
Karate is safe because we practice it safely. Karate is fun, but horseplay will not be tolerated. Remember that this is a karate class. You are learning to punch and kick other people, so you should expect to be punched and kicked on occasion. Injuries are very rare, but discomfort should be expected.
Once class has begun, for everyone’s safety, do not enter or leave the training floor without the instructor’s permission. If you have a question, raise your hand and wait for assistance. Otherwise, pay attention quietly and keep your hands to yourself unless instructed otherwise.
Karate uses some elements of Japanese culture and language. Students refer to each other as “Smith-san” (instead of “Mr. Smith”) and refer to the instructor as “Sensei.” Likewise, students and instructors bow to each other, and to the dojo itself, as a matter of courtesy. It’s simply the Japanese version of shaking hands.
Your progress in karate will be measured by testing for new belts. We offer tests regularly, for students who are eligible, but you will not always be eligible.
Additional information can be found by clicking on the links below, or in the navigation bar on the left, but don’t let it overwhelm you. If you’ve read this far, you’ll be ready for your first class.
Thanks again for joining us. If you have any other questions, please ask your instructor.
